FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT ARE YOUR FEES?
My fees very by service. Sessions that involve only discussion ("direct coaching") can run as low as $10/hr. For sessions that also involve document creation (resource sheets, schedules, checklists, templates) or document editing (articles, dissertations), I will provide an estimate based on the size of the task. As an example, thesis/dissertation editing typically ranges from $1-2 per page.
The total cost you will be obligated to pay for a service, the timing of payment (in advance vs. deposit), and the method of payment will all be outlined to you in a service contract that both parties will sign prior to the start of our work together.
HOW DO I PAY YOU? CAN I GET A REFUND IF I'M NOT SATISFIED WITH THE RESULTS?
Direct coaching services must be paid for in advance. Document services for which I provide an estimate require a non-refundable 30% deposit.
Please note: during busy periods I may not be able to accommodate all requests. I will not request payment from you until I confirm that I am able/willing to take you on as a client.
Because my services are so far below market rate, I cannot offer refunds for any fees less than $100. For services costing more than that, I will refund the fee (minus the non-refundable deposit) if both parties agree a refund is warranted.
YOUR FEES SEEM REALLY CHEAP. WHY IS THAT?
I work a full time job in Research Development, an interesting and dynamic field that I love. Because of this, I don't have to rely on income from GradAssistant as my primary source of support. This allows me to offer my services at rates well below market value, in the hope that doing so levels the playing field for students who might otherwise be unable to access these kinds of services.
The catch: because I do work full-time, my ability to take on clients through GradAssistant may change throughout the year.
CAN YOU GUARANTEE THAT I WILL GET A JOB/ PASS MY DEFENSE/ WIN A GRANT/ ETC. THROUGH USING YOUR SERVICES?
No. As you might expect, I do not provide any guarantees of employment, funding, publication, etc.. While I firmly believe that my services can improve your experience of graduate school and the degree of success you experience, it it would be dishonest to promise results I cannot myself control.
Note that I reserve the right to refuse service to anyone, including those who disregard the above disclaimer.
WHAT DEGREE PROGRAMS DO YOU WORK WITH?
My undergraduate work was in the sciences (biochemistry and neuroscience), I received professional training in social science (anthropology), and my doctoral degree is in the humanities (music). Combining this background with my current job coaching faculty and staff of all disciplines in research development skills, there are few fields outside of my portfolio.
I'M A UC DAVIS STUDENT. CAN I STILL USE YOUR SERVICES?
Because I am currently employed by the University of California at Davis, there are some services I cannot offer to UC Davis graduate students because doing so would create a conflict of interest with my job. That said, for any service I cannot provide directly I can offer contact information for the person/people who can. Either way, I'm ready to help.
WHAT IF I NEED HELP WITH SOMETHING NOT DESCRIBED ON THIS SITE?
There are certain services I am not qualified to provide; these include psychological counseling, immigration/visa assistance, and legal advice. There are also (ethically dubious) services I refuse to provide; this includes drafting content for seminar papers, articles, or sections of theses/dissertations.
That said, if you are looking for assistance with something not described here but related to the mission and goals of GradAssistant, please contact me to discuss.
